Castaic Lake Fishing Report 06/19/2021

Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass:

As water levels continue to fall, the Bass are holding on main-lake points, secondary points and bluffs anywhere from the bank out to twenty feet deep. They are pulling out of the smaller coves as they no longer offer the deep water safety the Bass need. Dropshot rigs, Ned rigs and finesse Carolina rigs are all getting bit, but my clients are sticking with the dropshot 90% of the time. The usual colors are all working but I do choose colors based on water clarity. The Oxblood and Morning Dawn patterns are working better in the stained water or mud lines, and I switch to the more translucent colors like Neptune Shad, Watermelon Candy and Purple Smoke in the clearer areas. Netting Shad for bait remains difficult as the falling water is keeping them off the bank for now. Hopefully they will come shallow when the lake stabilizes in a month or two.

Striped Bass:

Mostly schoolie sized Stripers on tap for anglers trolling Yak flies on fly-coring rigs in the fifteen to thirty foot depth zone. Main lake points and bays in the Fish Arm and around the island in the Ski Arm are holding good schools, with the mornings providing the best action as of late. Increased wake boat traffic is making it difficult to troll properly in the main lake basin during the day. The only surface action I’ve seen is the small fish that are ten to twelve inches long feeding on micro baitfish, but there are some larger ones under those schools. Throw a small swimbait five feet under the boils and you may be surprised by a two to four pounder.

Castaic Afterbay:

The good bite continues here with stable water conditions and thick weed beds. C3 Baits Shimmys in Neptune Shad on a 6lb test Carolina Rig continue to get bit on the outside weed edges. There are lots of smaller bait fish around the weeds so I am anticipating a morning topwater bite sooner than later. The swim beach is open which means they are killing the weeds in this area, but there are plenty of weeds and fish in the North end and the Eastern shoreline. There are some big fish being caught here for anglers putting in the time.
