Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass:

Bass fishing remains solid for fish that are mostly in the pre-spawn stage. Fat and strong, willing to bite on virtually any finesse technique and any popular color. Rocky points and shoals leading into spawning areas continue to be our focus. We are mainly fishing wacky-rigged Senkos early and dropshot rigs once the sun gets high. Green Pumpkin and Watermelon colored Senkos with the tails dipped in chartreuse dye are getting quality bites cast tight up to the rocks. Smallmouth are on the chew and very aggressive adding to the fun.

Striped Bass:

Yak flies on fly-coring rigs remain the best way to cover water and find fish. Shad continue to move out of deep water, spreading the Striper schools out all over the lake. Do a little scouting before dropping your lines in and you will find the fish.We are mainly focused on the Fish Arm main lake points but the Ski Arm has some fish too. The area around the island is a good place to look. Trolling speed is essential to getting bites. 2.0 to 2.2 mph seems to be the preferred speed. Fish are anywhere from 9″ to 9 pounds right now.

Castaic Afterbay:

Excellent Bass fishing on tap despite lots of fishing pressure. Numbers and size available for anglers utilizing the tried and true C3 Baits/Carolina Rig combo in the swim beach area and campground shoreline in five to fifteen feet of water. C3 Baits Shimmys and Jobus in Neptune Shad are putting quantity and quality LMB in the net. Senkos are getting some bites as well. Weeds are starting to grow, reaching the surface in some areas.

Castaic Lake Conditions:

Water Temp Surface:

71°

Water Clarity:

15′ to 20′ visibility. Light algae bloom.

Water Level:

Down 40′ and dropping slow and steady

The overall bite slowed considerably this week with most of the fish concentrated in a small area of the ski arm and getting hammered with every presentation possible. Small Stripers and Largemouth Bass returned to chasing baitfish on the surface and can be caught on umbrella rigs, small swimbaits and Kastmasters.

C3 Baits Shimmy’s in the Neptune Shad color pattern fished on the 6lb. Carolina Rig continue their dominance. This is a hard presentation to beat, as the Bass tend to slow their activity level once the sun gets up. The outer weed edge in 20 to 25 feet of water along the Eastern shore continues to hold quality Bass to seven pounds, along with South end along the rocks.

With the lake continuing it’s drawdown to 150 feet, we’re at the old drought line around 120′ which means the sticks and bushes are high and dry. While this is good news for our terminal tackle it also means we are seeing the lake at a level not witnessed since it was filling up in the early 70’s. The once rocky, clean shoreline has given way to 50 years of mud and silt buildup.
