Castaic Lake Fishing Report 05/02/2021

Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass:

Castaic’s Bass population continues to make it’s annual migration to the back of the coves and cuts. Main lake points and bluffs with deep water access are still holding quality fish in the ten to twenty foot zone with secondary points coming into play more and more every day. Dropshot rigs, Ned rigs and light line Carolina rigs have all been productive in the deeper water with wacky rigged Senkos dominating the shoreline zone. Good color choices for the worms are Oxblood Red, Morning Dawn and any of the Aaron’s Magic hues. Natural shad, green pumpkin and watermelon colored Senkos with the tails dipped in chartreuse dye are all getting bit. Targeting areas that have wind blowing in on them pays dividends once the sun gets high.

Striped Bass:

Hit and miss again this week with mostly smaller fish showing in the thirty foot zone. If you put the time into locating the schools you will find some quality fish. The ski arm is still the place to be as the fish arm is getting a lot of attention and fishing pressure. Trolling Yak flies on the fly-coring rigs has been the best way to cover water and find fish. The Shad continue to move out of deep water as we are seeing large schools as shallow as fifteen feet. This bite is ready to explode as the Shad bunch up and continue migrating to the larger coves.

Castaic Afterbay:

Good numbers of quality two to five pound Largemouth are available to anglers dragging the C3 Baits/Carolina Rig combo in the swim beach area. There are lots of small males on beds in this zone with the larger females out in slightly deeper water. Shimmys and Jobus in Oxblood/Red Flake and Neptune Shad color patterns continue to dominate this bite. A low and slow presentation with 6lb. test line will definitly get you bites. Very crowded on weekends.

Castaic Lake Conditions:

Water Temp Surface:

62°

Water Temp at 20′:

N/A

Water Clarity:

20′ visibility. Light to medium algae bloom in some areas.

Water Level:

The overall bite slowed considerably this week with most of the fish concentrated in a small area of the ski arm and getting hammered with every presentation possible. Small Stripers and Largemouth Bass returned to chasing baitfish on the surface and can be caught on umbrella rigs, small swimbaits and Kastmasters.

C3 Baits Shimmy’s in the Neptune Shad color pattern fished on the 6lb. Carolina Rig continue their dominance. This is a hard presentation to beat, as the Bass tend to slow their activity level once the sun gets up. The outer weed edge in 20 to 25 feet of water along the Eastern shore continues to hold quality Bass to seven pounds, along with South end along the rocks.

With the lake continuing it’s drawdown to 150 feet, we’re at the old drought line around 120′ which means the sticks and bushes are high and dry. While this is good news for our terminal tackle it also means we are seeing the lake at a level not witnessed since it was filling up in the early 70’s. The once rocky, clean shoreline has given way to 50 years of mud and silt buildup.
