Castaic Lake Fishing Report 02/07/2021

Better weather resulted in an uptick in fishing success this week. The Bass are still spread out around main lake bluff walls, 45 degree banks and rocky points. The key has been to focus on East facing rock that gets the sun early. These areas tend to warm up first and attract Bass looking to move up into warmer water. The ten to twenty five foot depth has been a good zone to target these active fish. Finesse plastics, Alabama rigs and jigs continue to get bit by Bass averaging two pounds.

Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass:

Better weather resulted in an uptick in fishing success this week. The Bass are still spread out around main lake bluff walls, 45 degree banks and rocky points. The key has been to focus on East facing rock that gets the sun early. These areas tend to warm up first and attract Bass looking to move up into warmer water. The ten to twenty five foot depth has been a good zone to target these active fish. Finesse plastics, Alabama rigs and jigs continue to get bit by Bass averaging two pounds.

Striped Bass:

The biting Stripers were found a little shallower this week as we targeted the thirty to fifty foot transitions into deep water. The area in the ski arm known as Water Ski Landing between Kong Island and Necktie Canyon was holding fish in the three to four pound range. Yak flies trolled on fly-coring rigs were hard to beat, although we did get a few bites on the KastMasters.

Castaic Afterbay:

Still a finesse bite here with the Carolina rig/C3 Baits Shimmy getting the better bites. Steeper dropoffs in the twenty to thirty foot zone on the West shoreline seems to be a good area to focus on. Otherwise there are Bass and Crappie biting vertically jigged spoons and ice jigs in the South basin. Find the bait schools on your sonar in the forty to fifty foot zone and drop it on their heads. There are a few bigger swimbait fish being caught by tight-lipped anglers with patience and know-how.
