Castaic Lake Fishing Report – 11/29/2020
Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass:
Falling water levels, high winds and lake closures continued thru the week making the windows of opportunity even smaller. The shorter than expected Fall bite was in the tank almost as soon as it got going. Live bait fishing is a distant memory at this point as well as any shallow water fishing of any kind. There are still a few small Bass to be caught on a dropshot rig but the majority of the fish have schooled up on the deep baitfish in the main lake and bigger creek arms. Spoons and ice jigs dropped straight down on these schools is probably the best pattern going, but it’s still hit & miss as the fish transition to their deep Winter structure spots.
Striped Bass:
Trolling for Striped Bass took a hit this week for the same reasons as mentioned above. We have gone from five bites a day to one or no bites as the conditions worsen. The fish are there in good numbers and size, as most fish we’re catching are seven to eight plus pounds. Producer Flies, Yak Flies and 661 KastMasters trolled anywhere from 20-60′ deep on leadcore line is producing the few bites available. The first and last hours of the day seem to afford the best chance of hooking up with one of these quality saltwater transplants. There is a decent spoon bite for those knowing how to utilize their sonar units and electric trolling motors to stay with the schools. some of these have been the smaller three pound class fish. The bay by the entrance to Elizabeth Canyon and the canyon itself continue to be our best areas.
