Castaic Lake Fishing Report – 11/01/2020
Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass:
The size of the Bass is definitly on the upswing as more and more two to four pound fish are moving into the coves and creek arms from the main lake. They continue to feed heavily on Shad and Silverside minnows while roaming in wolf packs, so being in the right area at the right time is key. We are fishing live Shad every day as it is very difficult to get these fish to bite otherwise. The baitfish are small, in the one to two inch range and are seemingly everywhere. Smaller jerkbaits like the Lucky Craft Pointer 78 fished during windy afternoons, are putting nice fish in the net for those not fishing live bait.
The Striped Bass were hard to locate again this week as the huge schools of baitfish were found anywhere from twenty to eighty feet deep. We did have some quality bites trolling Producer Flies and 661 KastMasters about thirty feet deep on leadcore line for linesides to seven pounds, but the activity window was short, only lasting for about a half hour when the lake first opened. No surface boils to report but hopefully that will change when they realize the coves are full of Shad.
Bass here are leaving the shallow flats as the weeds begin to die off. Fishing the deep weed edge with a Neptune Shad colored C3 Baits Shimmy on a Carolina rig has been hard to beat, as this technique stays in the water longer and covers a bigger area resulting in more bites. As the bites get fewer, the quality of the fish is going up making this an excellent option if you are limited on time.
